5 - Criminal Trials Ellen Hounsell for stealing. 6 Jul. 1864 (page 11 col. C)
Ellen Hounsell, aged 18, pleaded “Guilty” to a charge of stealing a number of postage stamps from her master, Mr. Kelly, a stationer, of No. 1 Brunswick Terrace, Poplar. She had already been in a reformatory for three years, and was now sentenced to be imprisoned for 18 months. Mr. M. William’s appeared for the prosecution. It was stated that the stamps had been sent to the prisoners sister, the wife of a butler, and a letter of hers was found, telling the prisoner to send more as soon as possible, and to burn the letter. The assistant Judge said that the sister might think herself fortunate she was not also being sentenced for her share in the matter. (Note, there is no mention of her sentence)
